CosmoCaixa analyses our society's eating habits in a course on nutrition
Madrid, 21 October 2003
Ensuring proper nutrition is one of life’s most important daily tasks. A sound nutritional state is synonymous with good health. The incidence of pathologies such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, intestinal disorders, cancer, infections, allergies and even Alzheimer’s disease is far higher in people whose food intake is not based on healthy habits and diet. Variety, balance and education are the standards that must guide our nourishment. Starting on 21 October, CosmoCaixa, the science museum of ”la Caixa” Foundation in Madrid, will offer the course “Do We Eat Properly? Nutrition for a Better Quality of Life”. It will seek to analyse our eating habits and suggest ways of improving them.
Diet and lifestyles have a decisive influence on the state of health of the individual. Maintaining balanced nutrition with an adequate, varied amount of foods that provide the essential nutrients for a sound state of health is indispensable for improving our quality of life.
Nonetheless, the emphasis placed on the relation of slenderness to success and beauty has become a determinant in the rise of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, which, although they have a psychiatric component, also involve abnormal eating behaviour. The multiplication of food allergies and the conclusions of recent studies showing the incidence that a deficient nutritional state can have on multifactorial diseases like osteoporosis or Alzheimer’s disease will also be analysed.
Coordinated by Ascensión Marcos, director of the Immunonutrition Group of the Instituto del Frío (The Cold Institute) – CSIC, the course will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 21 October to 30 October, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
