Speaking at CosmoCaixa Barcelona, Bill Gates stresses his commitment to global health and development in cooperation with ISGlobal

Barcelona, 4 June 2010

At CosmoCaixa Barcelona today, Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, stressed his commitment to helping to fight poverty and to improve global health. Gates was accompanied at the event by: HRH Infanta Doña Cristina, President of ISGlobal and Director of the Fundación ”la Caixa” International Department; Professor Javier Solana, Vice-President of ISGlobal; Doctor Pedro Alonso, Director of ISGlobal; and Marina Geli Government of Catalonia Health Minister.

Established in the year 2000 and based in Seattle, USA, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is the world’s largest philanthropic foundation in terms of budget. In recent years, the Foundation, which received the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation in May 2006, has worked on important projects that combat such major diseases as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

The goal of ISGlobal is to contribute to improving global health by generating, managing, transmitting and applying knowledge in this field. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is amongst the organisations involved in the governance and activities of the new institute.
